Autumn is not just a time for harvesting and preparing the garden for winter. On the contrary, it is ideal for planting many types of crops. We've compiled some tips on specific crops and flowers and an overview of methods to support them.

What plants to plant in autumn

Onions and garlic

Although onions and garlic tend to be considered spring crops, planting in autumn offers several advantages. It gives the plants a more robust root system, makes them more resistant and gives them a more intense flavour. Garlic should ideally be planted in a sunny and warm location.

Lettuces and spinach

Leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach can also be planted in autumn. They thrive better in the cooler season because the cold temperatures increase the concentration of sugars in the leaves, leading to a more intense flavour.

Other vegetables you can plant in autumn include carrots, parsley and radishes. To help your vegetables grow, it is advisable to cover the beds with white, non-woven fabric.

Flowers and trees

Autumn is also the ideal time to plant ornamental bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and snowdrops. These flowers need a cool period to germinate and will reward you with abundant blooms in spring. The bulbs of these flowers can be planted deep; generally up to three times the bulb's height is recommended, and a layer of soil will protect them from temperature fluctuations.

If you plan to plant fruit trees (trees and shrubs), these should be planted from about mid-October until the first frost. September and October are also good months for planting conifers. However, give the conifers plenty of water to have enough moisture throughout the winter.

How to encourage crop growth

Soil is the foundation of any successful garden. Therefore, the soil should be enriched with compost or natural fertilisers before planting. Mulch or grass clippings should be placed between the rows. This will help the soil to retain moisture better and make it more resistant to temperature changes.
